Help Young Minds

Allowing every child to reach for the stars

Our Board Members

Dourra Assani

Chair of Expansion (New Branch)

Dourra Assani (She/Her) is the co-founder of Help Young Minds and currently occupies the role of Chair of Expansion (new branch) in the Young Mind’s Eye board. She graduated with an Honours B.Sc in Biomedical Science from the University of Ottawa. She has a great interest in education accessibility which is why she takes great pleasure working with Young Minds Eyes. She is responsible for the creation of new Help Young Minds branches across Canada which involve contacting the universities, creating the necessary documentation to create the club and introducing the new club’s executives to their roles, responsibilities and to the functioning of the Help Young Minds. Outside of school and her other activities, Dourra enjoys cooking, swimming and singing!

Jessica Bennett

Chair of In-Branch Expansion

Jessica Bennett graduated with a B.Sc. with Honors in Cell Biology from the University of Alberta. This is her second year being involved with the Young Minds brand, serving as the Executive at Large for Help Young Minds last year. After her immersive experience as Executive at Large, she gained a holistic appreciation of the organization and its mission and wanted to help out at the Board level to shape the long term goals of the group. As the IBEX Chair, she is responsible for the recruitment, intake, and onboarding of all new Young Mind’s Eye Executives, and supports the implementation of new programs in HYM and YME. In her spare time, she enjoys socializing with friends, playing brain games, and adding to her neuroblastoma fridge magnet collection!

Josiah Kwabena Afriyie

Executive Chair

Josiah Kwabena Afriyie is an economics major at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. He currently serves as the Executive Chair of the Young Minds Eye. In this position, he oversees the entire activities of the non-profit and reports directly to the board. Josiah is very passionate about making education accessible to all without any barriers. This passion is influenced by a quote from his role model, Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful tool we can use to change our world.” He enjoys watching basketball during his leisure time and is a proud supporter of the Toronto Raptors.

Tina Huynh

Student Group Advisor

Hey Young Minds, my name is Tina (she/her). I recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honors in Psychology. I first started volunteering with Help Young Minds as a Blogger and have so much fun vibing with our student group in creating cool content for students. I believe in providing the best resources and sharing my personal experience with students, especially now that I went through the hustle of being a university student. This year, I am a Student Advisor for our student group; and I am more than happy to chat about any concerns that our group members have. During my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin, exercising, and spending time with my family.
