How to Apply for a job

Trying to find a job can be quite daunting. There are a lot of factors that you need to consider before you apply for a job. You have to keep your options flexible, so that you can find a job. For example, I wanted my first job to be at a clothing store, especially in Banana Republic. However, when I applied there, they preferred other candidates due to my limited experience and availability. Consequently, I applied to places that require less experience and have a lot of employees. I ended up getting a job at a grocery store where I work as a cashier and customer service associate, which is a job completely different from what I anticipated. Even though it was not a clothing store like I initially wanted, the job at the grocery store aligned well with my availability and it did not interfere with my school schedule. In this blog, I will discuss strategies for job applications and what you need to know about the application process.

1. Make a resume

The first step you need to take in your job search journey is to create a resume. Ensure you include relevant experience and details, so that employers know who you are and what you do. Things you need in your resume include: contact information, objective, education, work/volunteer experience, skills, and any certifications you possess. Once your resume is ready, you can begin applying for jobs! Furthermore, some positions may require you to write a cover letter. A cover letter serves as an opportunity for you to introduce yourself, highlight your skills and qualifications, and articulate why you are a suitable candidate for the position and company.

2. Search for job openings

There are numerous online websites that offer job listings, with Indeed and LinkedIn being among the most popular and free. These sites allow you to filter out what you are looking for, enabling you to narrow down options that align with your preferences. For example, you can tailor your search for a part-time cashier job, and you will find that all the list positions align with your filters. Moreover, applying for jobs online helps you track your application progress. You can monitor which employers viewed your resume, who has expressed interest in setting up an interview, and which applications have been declined. Stay hopeful and persistent in your job search efforts! There is always something for everyone. Additionally, you can consider attending career fairs, which is another way to explore employment opportunities and build meaningful connections. Each booth at the event provides valuable insights and information into the company and job opportunities, perhaps giving you the chance to directly connect with the hiring managers!

3. Prepare references

Certain job applications may require you to include references. These references should ideally be individuals who have a strong understanding of your character and work ethic, such as a teacher or a supervisor from a volunteer role you had. Have two or three references readily available, as employers may reach out to them to gather insight about your qualifications and suitability for the position. You can include those references in the final page of your resume.

4. Prepare for interviews

Preparing for an interview is crucial to effectively and successfully demonstrate your skills and qualifications. Begin by conducting thorough research about the company, familiarizing yourself with its mission and core values. This will enable you to answer common interview questions such as: “Why do you want to work for our company?” or “If hired, what will you bring to the company?” Furthermore, ensure you fully understand all job requirements in advance of the interview. This will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the role during the interview, showcasing how your relevant experience and skills align with the job expectations. This will impress the hiring managers and make you stand out from other candidates!
