Amy Alex



Math, Science, Social Studies, and French





Amy is a third-year Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology student. Her hobbies include working out, painting, hanging out with family, reading books, and binging Netflix ( the office mainly). The reason she decided to volunteer with HYM is because "I loved the idea of helping children achieve their potential and I want to make a difference in a child’s life. I have worked with children for 3 years now and it has been a wonderful and fulfilling experience."



Ailey Semple



English, Social Studies, Math, and Science





Ailey is a third year of Elementary Education student. Her hobbies include painting, reading, crocheting, hanging out with all of her animals (dogs, cats and a horse) as well as being a part of a recreational volleyball team. Ailey decided to volunteer with HYM because "The mission statement really spoke to me. I believe all should have access to a quality and positive educational experience, especially when they don't fully understand a concept yet. In addition, I really enjoy teaching and trying to expose students to the joys of education and studying!"



Amy Wenzel



French, Social Studies, and Science.





Amy is a first year Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology student at the University of Alberta. She is an artistic and acrobatic gymnast, and in her spare time she likes to read. Amy decided to volunteer with the HYM organization because "I think that tutoring can make a huge difference in terms of academic success and that that opportunity should be available to everyone who needs it."



Allyson Wong



Math





Allyson is in the after-degree Secondary Education program at the University Of Alberta, with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physical Education. In her spare time she loves to draw! She also loves staying active so she spends lots of time at the gym lifting weights and during the summer she goes kayaking and hiking back home in Calgary. Allyson decided to volunteer with HYM because "I believe everyone deserves to have access to education, no matter their circumstances. I also want to be able to teach students that Math can be fun!"



Benjamin Chong



Science, Social Studies, and Math





Benjamin is a first-year Biochemistry Honors student at the University of Alberta. He loves to work out, swim, play badminton and cook. Benjamin decided to volunteer with HYM because: "I want to enable students to reach their full potential by letting them have access to resources and someone they trust."



Cheryl Lee



Math, Biology, Chemistry and Physics





Cheryl is a 3rd year cell biology student at the University of Alberta. Her hobbies include singing, reading books, and watching movies. She decided to volunteer with HYM because: " I really enjoyed tutoring in the past so when my friend showed me she was tutoring with Help Young Minds I decided to join too as it seems like an experience I would enjoy."



Ella Potvin



Math, Science, and English





Ella is a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minoring in Psychology at the University of Alberta. Her hobbies include snowboarding, baking and travelling. Ella decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I have a passion for teaching and I believe it education is a human right. It is very important to hold a space for children who are experiencing socioeconomic hardships to receive additional resources to better their learning."



Emma Compri



English, Social, Math, Science





Emma is a Second year Bachelor of Elementary Education student. Emma enjoys watching Disney movies with family, learning languages, and hanging out with friends. Emma joined HYM because "I wanted a way to get better at teaching while simultaneously lending my time and attention to a student."



Emma Nickel



Math, Biology, and Chemistry





Emma is in her third year of a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, minoring in Mathematics. Emma enjoys working out, playing volleyball, watching Oilers games, reading, and hanging out with her family and friends. Emma joined HYM because "I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching. I saw this as an excellent opportunity to gain relevant experience while making a meaningful difference in a student’s life. I am deeply passionate about learning, and I hope to help students reach their full potential!"



Emma Ton



Math





Emma is a first year engineering student. Emma enjoys reading, drawing, designing, and watching hockey! Emma joined HYM because " I would love to ensure that everyone gets the help they need and are able to reach their highest academic potential regardless of other obstacles."



Ethan Mcclain



Math, English, Science, Biology, Chemistry





Ethan is a Bachelor's of Science student with a major in Biological Sciences and an undeclared minor. He loves love playing sports and the guitar. Ethan decided to volunteer with HYM because "volunteering is something I have always personally found rewarding and Helping Young Minds provides me with a great opportunity to make a larger contribution to positively influencing the lives of young adults and children."



Favour Alege



Math, Science, and English.





Favor is currently in her 1st year in the BSc Honours Neuroscience program with a minor in Biological Sciences. She loves to capture moments through photography, especially during her walks where she gets to explore nature and new places. She is also a big fan of K-dramas. Whenever she has the chance, she enjoys joining choirs because she love singing. Favor decided to join HYM because "I've always appreciated the support I've received from my mentors and tutors when I try to learn something academically. I would love to do the same for younger students who need academic help. That's why I decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds."



Fiona Connolly



French, Math, and Science





Fiona is currently in the first year of her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). During her undergraduate degree, she was a part of the Panda's Cross Country and Track teams and still enjoys running in her spare time. She also loves to hike, camp or ski in the mountains, as well as spend time playing board games with friends and family. she decided to volunteer with HYM because "I believe education can be a powerful tool to unlock opportunities for children, regardless of their circumstances. I would love to help children learn because I understand how stressful school can be without someone to turn to if learning gets difficult. I have always enjoyed sciences and math, and I would like to share with others how fun school can be, especially with the right help and guidance."



Ghazal Pakseresht



Math and Science





Ghazal is currently in her second year of university with a major in psychology and a minor in biological sciences. Her hobbies mostly consist of playing the piano, working out either at the gym or doing pilates, and reading books. When she has the time she absolutely loves filmmaking and acting in plays and short films. She decided to volunteer at Help Young Minds because "I have always loved working with children and helping to teach. I have experience with helping teach (teacher assistant) young children cultural dancing along with preparing them for cultural plays. Through this experience I found I loved working with children and teaching, and I love subjects such as math and science and would love to help young children truly understand these subjects and enjoy studying as much as possible. I found small tricks and tools that helped me a lot growing up, and I would love to see if these little tricks could help children learn and understand the material better!"



Ibrahim Khodabocus



English, Math, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry.





Ibrahim is currently doing his PhD in Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. He has his MSc degree in Biological Sciences(UofA), and BSc in Biology(Dalhousie University). He plays guitar and is also a bit of a movie buff: Tarantino and Nolan movies are absolutely (mostly) brilliant works of art. He has taught for several years at the highschool level during his undergrad and master's, earning a Department of Biological Sciences Teaching Award in 2021 and a Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Teaching Award in 2023, so he thought this would be a solid opportunity to give back. Ibrahim chose to volunteer with HYM because "I really believe in the HYM Mentorship mission, having coordinated several mentorship programs within Pediatrics over the years, I believe I might be able to add to this initiative as well."



Jane Hopkins



Social Studies, Math and Science





Jane is a third-year University of Alberta student currently doing a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. Her hobbies include enjoy playing sports, running, reading, and spending time with friends and family. Jane chose to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I want to help give all students the opportunity to excel in academics. As well, I want to ensure that resources are made available to all students to help them learn more effectively."



Jeslin Tijo



General Science and Biology





Jeslin is a fourth year student at the University of Alberta doing a Bachelor of Science Honors in Psychology degree. In her free time she likes to travel, hike, cook, and play flute and piano. She decided to volunteer with HYM because "I enjoy supporting kids in learning and discovering what they can truly achieve."



Josephine Lawal





Josephine is a second student doing a Bachelor in Science with Honours in Neuroscience. Her hobbies range from photography/videography, and snowboarding, to playing the piano and singing. She decided to volunteer with HYM because "I enjoy teaching subjects I'm interested in, and would love the opportunity to help others grow and succeed academically."



Julian Lau





Julian is a second-year Physiology Honors student at the University of Alberta. His hobbies include playing badminton, chess, and hanging out with friends. He decided to volunteer with HYM because "I believe in the importance of nurturing the next generation of leaders in the community. I hope to be able to pass on what I have learned to all students, regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds, so they can develop and discover their passions."



Kesia Muthuthotatil



Math





Kesia is currently a third-year student at the University of Alberta, majoring in Criminology. She loves to read books, go on walks and enjoy the scenery of Edmonton especially the river valley, and recently embroidery. She decided to volunteer at HYM because "I have always loved working with kids and especially helping them achieve their full potential. As someone who has had tutors before I understand how important it is to have someone who students can depend on when they are not understanding what is being taught in class and help them become confident in their abilities."



Kylie Holmstrom



English, Math, Science, and Social Studies





Kylie is currently a 3rd-year arts student transferring into elementary education. In her free time, she loves to go on adventures with her friends, work out, hike, snowboard, or watch movies! She is in a CSL class that provides her with a volunteer placement, and as soon she read about Help Young Minds "I knew that I wanted to work with them. I believe that every student should have resources to reach their fullest potential, and I am so excited to be able to put out resources and help individual students with HYM."



Kyle Nguyen



Math and Physics





Kyle is a second-year Bachelor of Science, student who is majoring in Computing Science and minoring in Mathematics. His current hobbies are sewing, 2D-animation, graphic design and coding! He would like to get into pottery and sculpting sometime in the future. Kyle decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I believe if given the opportunity to help someone, you should. As well, I also enjoy working with kids, and watching them grow more confident in themselves and their abilities to problem solve."




Labiba Raisa



Math and Science





Labiba is a third-year University of Alberta student currently doing a Bachelor of Science Honours in Physiology. Her hobbies include hiking and being outdoors, especially when it's raining. Labiba also likes to read and run her own jewelry business. Labiba chose to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I believe extra education should not be limited to those who can afford it. The exchange of knowledge should be free. I've also noticed that exchanging any knowledge that I have with others enhances my own understanding and memory of the subject/concept."



Laibah Khan



Math and Science





Laibah is in their last year studying biochemistry at the UofA. Laibah has been tutoring students since high school on various subjects and decided to continue that with HYM. In Laibah's free time, they like to go on walks and spend time with their family.



Lia Rogers



English, French, Science, and Chemistry





Lia is a first year Bachelor of Science Specialization/Bachelor of Education student. Lia enjoys playing hockey, reading, and going out with friends. Lia decided to volunteer with HYM because I decided to volunteer with HYM because "I love learning and I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to receive a quality education. I believe educators and tutors play a crucial and influential role in a student's learning and I hope that I can provide students the support they need to reach their goals and succeed."



Madison Guinto



Math, Biology, and Chemistry





Madison is in her first year of Honours Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology. She enjoys playing volleyball and going to the gym. Madison also love long drives and travelling while listening to good music. She decided to volunteer with HYM because "I have been tutoring for three years now and would love to be able to continue during university. I have seen the effects of tutoring first hand and believe that it is valuable for students' learning. I love this organization's goal of making tutoring more accessible and affordable for students and would love to be part of this cause!"



Razan Ahmed



Math, Science, and Biology





Razan is a first year student majoring in Physiology and minoring in Economics. Razan enjoys soccer, skiing, thrifting, reading. Razan decided to join HYM because "all kids are smart but not all circumstances are equal. Everyone deserves an equal shot at success.'



Riley Owen



Math and English





Riley is a second year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Alberta, Majoring in Finance and minoring in Spanish Language and Literature. She enjoys running, reading and skiing. Riley decided to volunteer with HYM because "I know first hand the positive impact having access to academic support can have on a young student. I believe every student should have the opportunity to get the help they need and deserve, regardless of any external circumstances that could potentially prevent such a thing."



Sarah Rieve



Math, Science, English, Social Studies





Sarah is in her second year of a Biological Science with a minor in Psychology degree. Sarah likes to read and spend time outdoors, especially during winter. Sarah decided to volunteer with HYM because "Volunteering with Help Young Minds allows me to make a difference in people's lives and make a positive impact in my community. I would love to help a student work towards academic success!"



Sophia Legault



English, Math, Social Studies, French





Sophia is a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Accounting. Some of her hobbies include baking, cross-country skiing and watching New Girl! She decided to volunteer with HYM because " I am passionate about helping students be their best selves academically! I love helping students learn, gain confidence and am excited to support them on their academic journey!"



Timothy Garcia



Math and English





Timothy is a fourth-year student at the University of Alberta, pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in Immunology. He spends his free time playing various sports (favourites being spikeball and basketball), playing video games, and playing the piano. He decided to volunteer at HYM because "I believe education is so important, and I know I am blessed to have opportunities in being able to educate myself through school. I wanted a chance to give back to the next generation and fine tune my leadership skills in a one on one setting."



Virtue Ekanem



Science, Math, and English





Virtue is a third-year University of Alberta student who is doing a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Neuroscience. In her free time, she enjoys diving into a good book, crocheting, and spending time with family and friends. She decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I believe that all students should have access to the educational resources they need to succeed, and I want to play a role in helping this mission become a reality."



Yzabel Bauyon



Social studies and English





Yzabel is in her second year of a Political Science with a minor in Sociology degree at the University of Alberta. In her free time she loves to cook, read, and hang out with her dog. She also loves to take dance classes, mostly tap dancing. Yzabel decided to volunteer with Help Young Minds because "I believe that every child deserves the opportunity to become confident with their schoolwork and themselves."
